Ben Bulla embarks on a Musical Journey in Spain!

RJAFTA 2022 Scholarship Recipient Ben Bulla excitedly departed for Spain last Tuesday morning. Ben is headed to Denia, a charming coastal town just south of Valencia on Spain’s eastern seaboard. Ben will immerse himself in the art of flamenco guitar under the guidance of Marcelo Rubio, a renowned flamenco master guitarist known for his expertise in accompanying flamenco dancers and singers. Over the next three weeks Ben will have the unique opportunity to study with Rubio, indulging in 90 minute lessons each day. In addition to his daily lessons, Ben will also be assigned home study skills to further enhance his learning experience.

During his stay in Denia, Ben will be hosted by Mayra Bercianos Cermeño and her husband Australian Musician Johnny Casino. Mayra is an experienced Spanish teacher who previously taught at the University of New South Wales before heading back to Spain a few years ago. Mayra currently teaches non-Spanish speakers at an adult school near her house, and she has kindly invited Ben to join in the cultural experiences offered at the school, providing him with a deeper understanding of Spanish language and culture. Mayra presently has a student from Fremantle attending the school, highlighting the diverse cultural exchange happening in Denia at the moment.

Directly opposite Mayra’s and Johnny’s apartment is a good ol’ Irish Pub (yep, in Spain!), and the end of the street offers restaurants and small bars which may offer Ben the chance to showcase his musical talents at an impromptu open mic session, or a ‘sing for his supper’ performance.

Whatever is in store for Ben on his musical and cultural journey of Spain, we eagerly await updates from him in the next week or two. Stay tuned and watch this space!
