Bringing The Spirit of Flamenco to the Hills

Ben Bulla, the 2022 recipient of the prestigious Robert Juniper Award for the Arts, recently returned from an inspiring journey to Spain, where he studied under renowned flamenco guitar master Marcelo Rubio. For three weeks, Bulla immersed himself in the art of flamenco, dedicating six days a week to intensive lessons with Rubio. He returned to Australia brimming with enthusiasm and a renewed passion for his craft, eager to share the fruits of his experience with the community.

As part of his scholarship project, Bulla orchestrated a vibrant showcase of his newly acquired skills through two free community performances. Demonstrating remarkable initiative and creativity, he hired a band, a lighting and sound engineer, and two professional flamenco dancers to bring his vision to life. These performances were nothing short of brilliant, seamlessly blending music, dance, and ambiance to capture the essence of flamenco’s fiery spirit and cultural depth.

The concerts were held in the picturesque gardens of Juniper Galleries, providing a perfect backdrop for this celebration of art and talent. The first performance, on October 6, unfolded in the golden light of spring sunshine in the mid-afternoon, transitioning into a magical sunset. The second, held on October 26, offered an enchanting evening experience - from the sweeping views of the city lights twinkling through the brilliant deep pink of the sunset, to the outdoor stage adorned with stage lighting, and the flamenco dancers enthralling all in the limestone gallery. Both events delighted audiences with their artistry and atmosphere, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.

Ben Bulla’s journey and his dedication to sharing his learning through these concerts exemplify the transformative power of arts scholarships like the Robert Juniper Award for the Arts. His performances were a heartfelt thankyou to the Trustees of RJAFTA, and to our patron and sponsor Trish Juniper. Bulla’s performances were also testament to the vibrant arts community the scholarship continues to nurture in the Shire of Mundaring.
